East Garner Magnet Middle School – Special Programs Department

East Garner Magnet Middle School serves a range of students with disabilities from severe and profound Autism to mild Learning Disabilities.  Our goal is to provide the least restrictive environment while also allowing each and every student to access the standard course of study as much as possible.  We offer consultative services for academics and behavior, inclusion services for academics as well as resource and separate setting services based on the student’s determined need level.  Each student is taught in a classroom that is centered on the International Baccalaureate practices and every student is exposed to school wide IB activities regardless of classroom placement.   Our special education teachers consult weekly with regular education teachers to assure that every student is accessing the IB program and collaboratively our teachers differentiate assignments to meet each student’s need.

Special Programs Department Grading Procedures

The special programs department follows the same grading procedures as the subject area departments.  For example, Resource Math classes follow the grading procedures for the Math Department.Curriculum Assistance is graded based on a rubric that scores the students from 4 to 1 in the areas of (1) Appropriate materials, (2) Course Work Agenda, (3) Binder, Notebooks and Folders for each class, (4) Understanding of the task/directions, (5) Completion of tasks/course work, and (6) Time management.  Grades will be given weekly based on the above areas.
